If you've seen my recent poll you see I've been toying with the idea of doing some kind of livestreaming type thing. I've been thinking about it for a while since I know it's a good way to get real, live feedback from my fans. Problem is I'm not exactly sure what I would do. Should it be videoblogging things where people can ask me questions or other random chatting. Straight livestreaming of my work? Tutorials, maybe? If you honestly what to see something like this happen, I'd like to know what y'all genuinely think. Since I don't actually own a webcam, and my work computer isn't connected to the internet, I want your thoughts since it's going to be an investment (albeit not a big one) on my part.

Convention Schedule:
May 31st-June 2nd 2013 Denver Comic Con Denver, Colorado

  • Mood: Cheerful
  • Reading: White is For Magic

I've seen wargamers do live streams when they paint a lot of models, seeing as the tedium can really set in if you're essentially mindlessly painting the same Ork 180 times. Livestreaming supposedly helps to keep the hobbyist engaged while continually hammering away at their monotonous workload. I've never done it myself, but that's just what I've heard and seen from watching others' Livestreams. If there's a part of drawing or coloring your comics that can take a long time but not a lot of brain power, that'd be a good time to do Livestreaming or something of that nature.

Another good idea for a subject of a Livestream is if there's anything you've been itching to show off or share. Do you have an idea for a one-shot sketch gnawing away in the back of your mind? Are you working on a cover and looking for feedback? ...I dunno, it's your Livestream. I only point this out because half the reason I Let's Play (different tech, but same idea) is to show off Dante's Inferno, and I figure you might have a similar pet project that you'd want to get on camera.

On the technical side, a quick sweep through Google search results doesn't seem to have many good non-webcam solutions. Probably the safest and least intrusive I've seen is Skype. It's not essential that you have a webcam, though you will need a microphone or headset of some kind. Frankly, literal "Livestreaming" (as in using livestream[dot]com) probably isn't the kind of thing you'd want to do. You need an account with a certain website, you need a streaming webcam, the links are finicky, and if anybody misses it (like I probably might), they miss it for good. It's a bunch of hassle, especially if you're only going to do this sort of thing a few times. Or if you suspect that a lot of people might miss it. Or if you think you'll get interrupted. (I know that's the bane of my recordings...)

If you're not married to the 'live response' idea, you could always do sort of a Q&A session where you take questions for a period of time and then answer via audio only, either posting the clip on YouTube or on Nerdvana. That would get around the webcam issue altogether, while still allowing you to do other stuff while recording. Tech-wise, it's not that different from how you made audioblogs back when you had tendinitis.

If you do a lot of art on your computer, you could do screen recordings of your work while you play your own speech for background audio. I don't know exactly what digital art programs you work with, but here's an example of WinxC1ub using GIMP and a desktop recorder with overlaid audio: ([link]). I've seen a lot of people use CamStudio for recording their screen output, though FRAPS would work just as well if you were willing to sink a little money into the efforts. (Though you have to set FRAPS to record Windows Aero desktop mode, or something like that.) To render it all together, I recommend Serif Movie Plus (Starter Edition). It's basically Vegas with a few less features, but it's completely free.

This is what makes you awesome Drake. If I were planning on taking over the world, you'd be my military strategist.

I definitely need some sort program to video capture my screen while I work. And then I could use my better work computer to record stuff without being connected to the internet. As to what people rather see, I'll leave them to comment and/or answer a poll. I'm not married to any particular idea, so I'm open for pretty much anything.
